Reading Specialist Certification

This program is available at all five Concordia locations.  This program is designed for individuals already holding a Master’s degree who wish to prepare for the Texas Reading Specialist Exam.

Students must have two years of experience as a full-time classroom teacher at a public or accredited, private EC-12 school.  The program consists of 18 credit hours (6 courses).  This specialization prepares students to sit for the TExES Reading Specialist Exam # 151.  A 16 week case study is required.

Graduate students selecting this specialization will:

• Meet Reading Specialist requirements set forth by the State of Texas
• Enhance personal proficiency as leaders and resource persons in literacy education
• Prepare for literacy instruction at early childhood, middle and high school levels
• Strengthen teaching of reading and writing across the curriculum
• Expand knowledge of children’s and adolescent literature
• Learn to diagnose and remediate difficulties in reading and writing
